The goalkeeper provides the last line of defense behind a sturdy back five. Rossi anchors the central position as the primary ball playing defender, while Shesternyov covers the left side of the central trio. The wide defenders, Carlos as the right wing back and Novak as the left wing back, are tasked with providing width and tracking back to maintain a narrow defensive block when out of possession.

CAJKOVSKI and Overath act as the engine room, where CAJKOVSKI works to shield the defense and Overath looks to connect the lines. Dzajic and Hamrin act as inverted wingers, cutting inside to create central overloads and finding space in the half spaces. This front line works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind the defenders, often looking for cutbacks from the byline when the wing backs push up.

One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The team also benefits from the ability to create wide overloads when Carlos and Novak join the attack. This provides a quick way to switch play and isolate the opposition wingers in one on one situations during a break.
