Newcastle Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Hornicek · Dedic · Thiaw · Burn · Hall · Nico · Miley · Wissa · Fernadez (Pardo) · Barnes · ToureNewcastle aims to play a high press with a heavy emphasis on verticality through a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly hit the opposition before they can settle. The team looks to stretch the defence by using wide players to create space for the central runners.
Hornicek acts as the last line of defence in goal. Behind a flat back four, Dedic operates as an attacking full back on the right to provide width. On the left, Hall is tasked to push forward and overlap the winger. Thiaw and Burn form the central defensive pairing, where Thiaw looks to win the header and Burn provides cover. The unit works together to squeeze the space and maintain a high line to catch opponents offside.
The midfield operates with a three-man unit that connects the defence to the attack. Nico plays as the left sided midfielder to shield the defence and intercept passes. Miley works on the right to carry the ball forward and link play. Fernandez plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and find the front three. This midfield group must press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch.
Newcastle utilizes three attackers across the front to pin the opposition back line. Barnes and Wissa operate as wide wingers, with Barnes looking to cut inside and Wissa to stretch the pitch. Toure plays as a pressing centre-forward to harass the defenders and hold up the ball. The team attacks in combinations, using the movements of the wingers to create runs in behind for Toure or late arrivals from the midfield.
One major advantage of this Newcastle formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front three and Fernandez can trigger a press to force a long ball from the opposition. Another strength is the potential for wide overloads when Dedic and Hall push up to support the wingers. This creates many one on one situations for the attackers to exploit.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on intense pressing and quick transitions to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
