Independiente aims to play a vertical game based on rapid transitions and defensive solidity using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on staying compact to deny space in the middle while using the wide areas to launch direct attacks. The goal is to win the ball back and quickly exploit the space left behind by an advancing opposition.

Santiago acts as the last line of defense for Independiente. The defensive unit works as a back five with Iván acting as the central man to command the zone. Sebastian and Franco play as the wider center-backs to cover the channels and win the second ball. Santiago and Facundo operate as attacking wing backs who push high up the pitch to provide width. This defensive block can sit deep to absorb pressure or step up to squeeze the space when the team wins possession.

The midfield operates as a double pivot consisting of Lautaro and Luciano. These two players must work hard to protect the back five and intercept passes. Luciano and Lautaro are tasked to cover the central zone and act as the link between the defense and the front three. They need to win the ball and immediately look to find the attackers to break the lines. When the team defends, they drop into a mid-block to ensure there is no gap between the midfield and the defensive line.

The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Chimy operates as a lone striker who works to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, Matías and Maximiliano play as wide wingers who want to cut inside to create scoring chances. They stay wide when the team builds from the back but move into the half spaces to combine in tight spaces during the final third. This front three is designed to press from the front and force the opposition into mistakes.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs join the attack. When Facundo and Santiago push forward, they create a numerical superiority against the opposition full backs. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can form a very narrow block that is difficult to pass through. The team can also use the speed of transition to hit opponents on the break.

This formation focuses on a heavy defensive block and quick counter attacks. It is best suited for games against teams that hold a lot of possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
