RummeniggeAl-Nassr focuses on a heavy defensive block and quick transitions using a 5-3-2. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition with vertical passing and pace. The lineup relies on a solid foundation to protect the goal while providing enough numbers in the middle to control the tempo when the ball is won back.
Gianluigi Buffon guards the goal, providing massive experience and presence between the posts. In front of him, Al-Nassr utilizes a back five that can shift between a wide defensive block and a more compact unit. Daniel Passarella (C) leads the line as the ball playing centre back, while Federico Redondo sits in the middle to sweep up loose balls and cover space. Beside them, Jurgen Kohler acts as a dominant presence in the air to win headers. On the flanks, Eric Gerets and Ruud Krol act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width while tracking back to form a five man line when out of possession.
The midfield is a three man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Edgar Davids brings intense pressing and energy to the left side, while Johan Neeskens works to win the second ball and drive forward with the ball in the central area. Michel Platini operates as the attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to find the feet of the forwards or play through the lines with his signature passing range. This trio links the defence and attack by recycling possession and finding ways to bypass the opponent's midfield.
Al-Nassr uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Marco van Basten acts as a striker capable of link up play between the lines and holding up the ball, while Karl Rummenigge plays as a second striker who looks to run in behind the defence. They attack in combinations, often using the width provided by Gerets and Krol to create space centrally. When the team wins the ball, the forwards press the opposition back line to force errors and allow the midfield to transition quickly.
This formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves when the ball is lost, while maintaining extreme compactness when defending a lead. Al-Nassr also benefits from wide overloads when the wing backs overlap the wide players, creating situations to deliver early crosses into the box. The defensive solidity allows the creative players to take risks in the final third.
The 5-3-2 formation provides a deep defensive base that is hard to break down. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, allowing Al-Nassr to strike on the break.
