Brentford Football Formation
Starting Lineup
I. Thiago · Jensen · Ouattara · Damsgaard · Sangaré · Yarmolyuk · Hickey · Collins · van den Berg · Schuster · KelleherBrentford aims to play a vertical and direct style of football through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup seeks to bypass the midfield quickly to catch the opposition off guard and strike with high intensity. The team focuses on rapid transitions to exploit gaps in the opponent defensive line.
Kelleher operates as the goalkeeper behind a very high and aggressive defensive line. The back two consist of Collins and van den Berg who must act as ball playing defenders to start attacks. Because there are only two central defenders, Collins and van den Berg must be ready to step up to intercept passes or cover space behind them. This duo needs to be extremely alert to prevent being caught by long balls while they try to squeeze the space.
The midfield operates as a four man unit consisting of a double pivot and two advanced players. Schuster and Hickey form the central pairing where they shield the two defenders and try to win the second ball. Schuster acts to protect the middle while Hickey looks to carry the ball forward. Ahead of them, Yarmolyuk and Sangaré play in the half spaces to connect the middle to the front line. They press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to find the forwards.
In the attacking third, Brentford utilizes four players to stretch the defence. Damsgaard and Ouattara act as wide wingers, with Damsgaard staying on the left and Ouattara on the right to provide width. The central presence is led by Jensen and I. Thiago as a two man forward partnership. Jensen and I. Thiago work to pin the last defender and create room for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The wingers look to get to the byline and deliver early crosses for the strikers to attack.
This Brentford formation offers great speed of transition when the ball is won in the middle third. The aggressive positioning of the midfield and forwards allows the team to press in coordinated waves. By using a heavy attacking lineup, the team can create wide overloads and force the opposition to defend deep.
This 2-4-4 formation is designed for high risk, high reward football. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to cope with direct play and intense pressing.
