Portland aims to dominate through a high press and quick attacking transitions using a 4-3-3 formation. Trey stays between the posts to organize the back line and sweep behind any high line. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four where Ronald acts as a defensive wing back to hold the width on the right. Ian provides balance at left back, while Alex and Joel operate as the central defenders. Alex and Joel must defend zonally and stay close together to prevent runners from breaking the line. The defensive unit works to maintain a high line, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the central defenders can win the header on.

The midfield functions with a three-man midfield with a carrier. Diego works as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and shield the defence. Joao acts as an inverted eight, driving forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Antony plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, operating in the pockets to create chances. This trio is responsible for compressing the midfield and ensuring the team can move the ball through the thirds effectively.

Portland uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Alexander and Omir act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central presence and pull the opposing full backs out of position. Gage operates as a pressing centre forward, looking to pin the last defender and find the feet of the striker during build up play. The wingers look to isolate a one on one wide or get to the byline to deliver early crosses. When Ian or Ronald push forward, they create space for the wide players to cut inside or occupy the half spaces.
