Starting Lineup

Clermont focuses on being defensively solid while looking to hit teams on the transition through a 5-2-3. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before using the wide areas to launch attacks. The team relies on a compact defensive unit to deny space in the middle, forcing the opposition to play wide before they can win the ball back and move it forward quickly.

In goal, the goalkeeper acts as the last line of defense to organize the back five. The defensive line uses a back three with ,g,g, i, and iy occupying the central spots to defend zonally. The wide defenders, yug and ù, act as attacking wing backs who provide the width when the team has the ball. While yug and ù push up to support the attack, the three central defenders stay close to maintain a narrow defensive block, with iy and i ready to cover any runs made by the opposition strikers.

The midfield functions as a double pivot consisting of ù and ù. These two players sit in front of the back three to shield the defense and protect the central zones. One of the ù players is tasked to press in a mid-block to disrupt the opponent, while the other works to recycle possession and link the defense to the attackers. By staying central, they aim to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

Up front, Clermont utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the opposition. The wide players, ù and ù, act as wingers who stay wide to pull defenders out of position, creating gaps in the middle. The striker, p, works as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and fight for long balls. When the team breaks quickly, the wingers look to cut inside or hit in behind on the transition, often looking for p to hold up the ball and lay it off to the oncoming runners.

A major advantage for Clermont is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs, yug and ù, who join the attack. This formation also offers great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The setup allows the team to shift between a heavy defensive block and a rapid counter at pace, using the speed of the wide players to catch the opposition out of position.
