RB Salzburg Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Krätzig · Schmid · Lindstrøm · Veratschnig · Kitano · Vertessen · Konaté · Redzic · Tabakovic · Drexler · ZawieschitzkyRB Salzburg focuses on verticality and high intensity through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to hunt the ball high up the pitch and transition into attack with massive speed. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and use the front line to disrupt the opposition buildup before they can settle.
Zawieschitzky acts as the last line of defense behind a very aggressive and high defensive line. The two central defenders, Drexler and Schmid, operate in a narrow block to protect the center of the pitch. Because there are only two defenders, Drexler and Schmid must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or cover large amounts of grass when the opponent tries to hit in behind on the transition. The defensive unit functions by staying close together to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The midfield is the engine room of RB Salzburg, operating as a heavy five man unit. Krätzig and Veratschnig act as a double pivot to shield the two center backs and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Kitano and Lindstrøm operate as two tens in the half spaces to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Vertessen plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space to receive on the half-turn. This group is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately spread wide once possession is regained.
The attacking front line utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Tabakovic plays as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for his teammates. On the flanks, Konaté acts as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create central overloads, while Redzic plays as a wide winger who hugs the touchline to provide width. This setup allows the team to attack in combinations, using the movement of Konaté and Redzic to create space for Tabakovic to work in or to deliver crosses into the box.
One major advantage of this RB Salzburg formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The midfield provides numerical superiority in the center, allowing the team to control the tempo once they win the ball. Additionally, the setup creates many one on one situations for the wide players as the opposing full backs are often caught out of position by the high press.
This 2-5-3 formation relies on extreme physical intensity and rapid ball movement to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play under pressure or those that try to build slowly from the back.
