Zawieschitzky starts in goal and oversees a very aggressive defensive line. The back line consists of only two central defenders, Drexler and Zabransky, who must play as ball playing defenders. They often step up to squeeze the space and set the offside trap, which requires them to be dominant in the air and quick to cover when runners break the line. Because there are only two players in the back, the unit functions as a high line that relies on the midfield to provide immediate protection.

The midfield is a massive five man unit designed to dominate the central areas and the half spaces. Krätzig and Veratschnig act as a double pivot to shield the defence, while Lindstrøm and Kitano operate as inverted eights to drive forward with the ball. Vertessen plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to link the lines and find the feet of the striker. This five man midfield allows RB Salzburg to compress the midfield and ensure they always have numbers to win the second ball.

The attack uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender of the opposition. Tabakovic acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the line and hold up the ball. On the flanks, Redzic and Konaté act as wide wingers who stretch the defence by spreading wide to create space in the middle. These three work in combinations to hit in behind on the transition, often looking for cutbacks from the byline or quick passes to find the feet of the striker in the box.

RB Salzburg gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the center makes it difficult for opponents to play through the lines and allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. The formation also offers great flexibility to shift between shapes, as the wingers can drop back to form a more traditional back five when defending a lead.
