Ajax focuses on a heavy high press and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike rapidly before the opposition can get organized. The team works to squeeze the space in the middle of the park to force long balls and then breaks quickly to catch defenders out of position.

Axel Pozzo sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defense works as a flat back four with Lewis at right back and Sawitzki at left back. Both full backs push up to support the wings while Ivančić and Schewzow operate as central defenders who focus on holding the line. Ivančić and Schewzow must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or drop back to cover runs in behind.

The midfield functions as a five man unit that controls the central zones. C. Thijs and N. Krieger play as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Elzinga works in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, K. Pokrovsky and M. Mahdi operate as wide midfielders who can tuck inside or spread wide to provide width. This group works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposing playmakers.

Ajax utilizes a lone striker in G. Vega to lead the front line. Vega acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and force mistakes. The wingers, K. Pokrovsky and M. Mahdi, look to cut inside and create overloads in the half spaces. The team builds attacks through combinations in tight spaces or by hitting in behind on the transition. This movement is designed to create cutbacks from the byline and find the feet of the striker.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The five midfielders can quickly collapse on the ball carrier to win it back high up the pitch. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, which makes it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The speed of transition allows Ajax to go direct and exploit the space left by advancing opponents.
