R. RIVEROS (74) · K. MOEKETSI (76) · RUY DE OLIV. (75) · T. REQUENA (74) · Y. ABIOLA (74) · P. SALAZAR (76) · M. ALBUQUERQUE (78) · G. GIULIANI (75) · D. COREY (75) · L. SEYKERE (71) · K. McINTOSH (75)Brighton aims to play a compact and defensive brand of football using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and use the space behind the opponent once the ball is recovered. The team focuses on sitting deep and staying organized to frustrate the opposition.
R. Riveros stays between the posts to command the area during defensive phases. The back line functions as a narrow defensive block with a back three consisting of Y. Abiola, T. Requena, and P. Salazar. Abiola acts as the central anchor, while Requena and Salazar provide cover. The wing backs, K. Moeketsi and Ruy de Oliv., are tasked to push up and provide width, but they must track back quickly to support the three center backs. This unit works to protect the central zone and squeeze the space between the lines.
In front of the defense, the team uses a four man midfield. G. Giuliani plays as a single pivot to shield the defense and break up play. M. Albuquerque and D. Corey operate as two central midfielders to control the tempo and win the second ball. K. McIntosh plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and link the midfield to the attack. This midfield group must stay compact to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle.
The attacking side of Brighton relies on L. Seykere as a lone striker. Seykere must hold up the ball and work hard to press the opposition back line. The team builds attacks through the wide areas when K. Moeketsi or Ruy de Oliv. overlap the midfield. The goal is to create runs in behind or find L. Seykere in combinations to turn defense into attack. The wide players and McIntosh look to exploit gaps created when the opposition pushes high.
One major advantage for Brighton is the compactness when defending in a mid-block. The narrowness of the five defenders and four midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads during transitions. This allows the team to switch play quickly and stretch the opposition defense.
This 5-4-1 formation provides a solid platform for Brighton to resist heavy pressure. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined low block.
