Starting Lineup

Lovric · Zaniolo · Karlström · Zanoli · Alaba · Solet · Vojvoda · Ekkelenkamp · Chakvetadze · Miller · Okoye

Udinese focuses on a high press and quick verticality in this 2-5-3 formation. The lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. This system relies on a heavy midfield presence to control the center and create chances through central passing and wide movements.

Okoye starts in goal to anchor the defensive side of the pitch. The defense relies on a two man back line consisting of Alaba and Solet. Both Alaba and Solet must be prepared to cover large spaces as the team pushes up the pitch. Alaba often steps into midfield to help progress the ball while Solet acts as a covering defender to sweep behind the high line. They must hold the line carefully to avoid being caught by long balls.

The midfield is the engine of Udinese and operates as a five man unit. Zanoli and Vojvoda form a double pivot to shield the two centre backs and win the second ball. Lovric and Karlström operate as two eights who drive forward with the ball to connect the lines. Ekkelenkamp plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the forward or arrive late into the box. This group works to compress the midfield and ensure the opposition cannot play through the center.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Chakvetadze plays as a left winger who looks to cut inside and create, while Miller operates on the right. Zaniolo acts as the central striker and uses his physical presence to hold up the ball and win headers. The wingers often pull wide to create space for Ekkelenkamp or the midfielders to run into. The goal is to use combinations in tight spaces to split the defense with a through ball.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the center, Udinese can easily control the tempo and recycle possession. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the front three and Ekkelenkamp triggering the press. This forces the opponent to play long balls which the central defenders can then intercept.

Udinese uses this aggressive setup to dominate games through central control and high intensity. This formation is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or defend deep in their own half.
