In front of the goal, Brnadić acts as the last line of defense. The back line operates as a narrow defensive block with three central defenders. Mazarura anchors the middle, while Ben Malherbe and C. Salgueiro provide cover to the left and right of the central zone. The wide defenders, Á. Aznar at right wing back and Beshkov at left wing back, are tasked with tracking back to support the three center halves while also providing width when the team moves up the pitch. This unit works to hold the line and ensure the opposition cannot find gaps between the defenders.

The midfield functions as a flat four that sits in front of the defensive block. Gaio and Iraj Abbasi form a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the central zone. Gaio works to intercept passes and break up play, while Iraj Abbasi helps to recycle possession. Moving ahead of them, J. Campos and F. Prado operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. J. Campos and F. Prado are tasked with pressing in a mid-block to win the ball back and quickly find the forward.

The attacking plan for AFC Wimbledon relies on a lone striker, Cienfuegos, who acts as a pressing centre-forward. Cienfuegos must hold up the ball and work to pin the last defender to create space for the midfielders. The team builds attacks by looking to exploit the wings through Á. Aznar and Beshkov or by playing through the lines into the feet of Cienfuegos. When the ball is won, the goal is to move the ball forward quickly to catch the opposition before they can recover.

A primary tactical advantage of this formation is the extreme compactness when defending, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. By using five defenders and a four man midfield, AFC Wimbledon can easily squeeze the space in the central third. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push up to support J. Campos and F. Prado in advanced positions.
