These two act as the primary cover, needing to be ready to step up or drop into a low block depending on the movement of the opposition. Because there are no wide defenders, the central pair must be ready to defend the wide areas and cover any runners that bypass the crowded midfield.

The midfield is the engine of this Celta system, using a dense block of six players to control every zone. Salgado/Marcelo Diaz and Sylvinho operate in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of them, Krohn Deli/Mazinho and Makelele/Edu occupy the central lanes to win the second ball and connect the lines. The formation then utilizes two attacking midfielders, Boban/David Silva/Doriva and Michu/Nenê, who sit in the half spaces to drive forward and create chances.
