AEK Football Formation
Starting Lineup
KAPNISI (5) · AVA (22) · KOUKOULAKI (50) · PROXENOU (16) · SAICH · GEORGIOU (6) · HANNAH (7) · SPYRIDONIDOU (33) · ΚΟΓΓΟΥΛΗ (10) · CHATZINIKOLAOU (9) · NASI (13)AEK relies on a direct and vertical style of play within a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to strike quickly on the transition and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The team looks to win the second ball and move the ball toward the attacking line as fast as possible.
Nasi acts as the last line of defense behind a flat back four. Proxenou operates as the right back to provide width, while Koukoulaki plays as the left back to cover the flank. In the center, Ava and Kapnisi form the defensive pairing, with Ava providing strength in the air and Kapnisi acting as a covering defender to sweep behind the line. This defensive unit works to stay compact and prevent runners from finding space between the lines.
The midfield uses a double pivot to control the central areas and shield the back four. Saich and Georgiou operate as the two holding midfielders, where Saich protects the left side and Georgiou maintains the center. They work to intercept passes and recycle possession to the wider areas. Further forward, Κογγουλή plays as a left attacking midfielder to create chances, while Hannah works on the right to drive forward and link the midfield to the front line.
AEK utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Chatzinikolaou plays as the left striker, often looking to make runs in behind the defense, while Spyridonidou operates as the right striker. This duo works in combinations to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to join the play. The front line is tasked to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One major advantage for AEK is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the midfielders. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it hard for opponents to play through the lines. The speed of transition allows the team to catch the opposition out of position during a counter.
This 4-4-2 formation provides a solid balance between defensive stability and quick attacking thrusts. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
