Santos focuses on a high pressing, vertical style of play using a 4-2-4. Brazão plays behind a flat back four that must remain disciplined to avoid being caught out of position. Duarte and Veríssimo operate as the central defensive pair, with Duarte looking to win the header and Veríssimo acting as a covering defender to sweep behind the line. Menino and Escobar provide the width from deep, though they must track back constantly to protect the flanks. The defensive unit relies on staying compact and squeezing the space to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.

The midfield works as a double pivot designed to control the center of the pitch. Arthur and Arão occupy the two central roles, acting as the engine that connects the defense to the attack. Arthur looks to receive on the half-turn and recycle possession, while Arão is tasked to shield the defense and press aggressively to win the ball back high up the pitch. This pair must be incredibly fit to cover the ground between the two banks of players.

In the attacking phase, Santos utilizes four players across the front to pin the last defender. Neymar Jr. and Coutinho operate as inverted wingers, cutting inside from the flanks to create central overloads. Everton and Gabigol work as a front two, with Everton acting as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls while Gabigol looks to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming midfielders. The front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

One major advantage for Santos is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build from the back. The formation also creates wide overloads when Neymar Jr. or Coutinho drift inside, leaving space for Menino and Escobar to overlap the winger. This setup puts immense pressure on the opposition's backline through constant verticality.
