Starting Lineup

Kolašinac · Muharemović · Katić · Malić · Šunjić · Bašić · Alajbegović · Mahmić · Bajraktarević · Lukić · Zlomislić

Bosnia and Herzegovina focuses on a heavy defensive block and quick transitions using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to sit deep and squeeze the space in front of the back line while waiting to hit opponents on the break. The team relies on staying compact to deny any space between the lines.

Zlomislić stays between the posts to organize the unit. The back line consists of a flat back four with Kolašinac acting as the left back to provide some width while Malić covers the right side. In the middle, Katić and Muharemović operate as the central defenders to defend zonally and clear the lines when under pressure. They aim to hold the line and win the second ball to prevent any direct threats from reaching the goal.

The midfield uses a five man line to clog the central areas. Bašić and Šunjić act as a double pivot to shield the defence and protect the centre backs. In front of them, Mahmić and Bajraktarević occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Alajbegović works on the left to help the full back. This group is tasked to intercept passes and recycle possession quickly once the ball is won.

Lukić operates as a lone striker and must hold up the ball to bring the midfield runners into play. The attacking unit relies on the wide midfielders to spread wide and provide service. When the team wins the ball, the goal is to hit in behind on the transition or use combinations in tight spaces to find Lukić. The wingers must track back to ensure the midfield stays compact when out of possession.

One major advantage for Bosnia and Herzegovina is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. By having five players in the midfield, they make it very hard for the opposition to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can quickly move from a low block to an attacking phase using the wide players.

This formation is designed to frustrate possession based teams by sitting deep and denying them space. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to play as an underdog and rely on counter attacks.
