Italy focuses on heavy verticality and high intensity with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the final third by pushing bodies forward and creating massive pressure high up the pitch. The goal is to win the ball back quickly and use the numbers in the middle and front to strike before the opponent can settle.

In goal, G.Donnarumma acts as a sweeper behind a very high line to cover any long balls played behind the defense. The backline consists of a pair of central defenders, G.Scalvini and A.Bastoni, who must be ready to step up and intercept plays early. Both players are required to play out from the back with composure, as there is very little margin for error with only two defenders sitting deep. This defensive unit relies on extreme concentration to manage space when the team is pushed up.

The midfield is the engine room of Italy, utilizing a five man block that controls the center and provides width. M.Kayode and R.Calafiori act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win second balls in the middle. Romano sits slightly ahead to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while S.Tonali operates as a left attacking midfielder and D.Frattesi acts as a right attacking midfielder. This configuration allows the team to press in a mid block or squeeze the space high up the pitch to recover possession immediately.

The attacking front three uses a central presence with F.Pio Esposito acting as a pressing centre forward to bother the opposition back line. On the flanks, N.Barella plays as a right winger who can cut inside, while N.Fagioli operates on the left. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and use quick combinations to split the defense with a through ball. The players work in tight spaces to move the ball forward and exploit the gaps left by defenders trying to cover the wide areas.

This formation offers significant advantages through a massive numerical superiority in midfield. By crowding the center, Italy can dominate ball retention and force the opposition into making mistakes. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. This allows for rapid transitions where the team can hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can reorganize their defense.

Italy uses this aggressive lineup to dominate possession and suffocate the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block or outplay an opponent through sheer volume of attacking numbers.
