Starting Lineup
Leighton W (Boca) · Emma (Boca) · Riona (Boca) · Leighton D (Boca) · Addyson (FC Dallas) · Stella (Boca) · Cleo (Boca) · Abigail (Boca) · Evie (Boca) · Emily (Boca) · Julia (Boca)Prioritizing defensive solidity and quick transitions, the team operates in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for opportunities to hit teams on the break. The central focus is to keep the unit compact and force opponents into wide areas where they can be contained and eventually intercepted.
Addyson stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. A back five provides a heavy presence in the box, featuring Leighton D as the central anchor who commands the area. Emma and Stella act as the wide centre-backs, providing cover for one another and stepping up to intercept passes. On the flanks, Leighton W and Riona play as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width and tracking back to defend against wide runners. This defensive unit works as a single block to prevent through balls.
The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Julia and Emily. They sit in front of the back five to shield the defence and pick up runners in the half spaces. Julia works to recycle possession and find the wide players, while Emily focuses on pressing aggressively to win the ball back in the center. These two connect the defensive line to the front three by receiving the ball and playing through the lines to trigger the attack.
In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Abigail and Evie operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition full backs out of position. Cleo acts as the lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and playing with her back to goal to bring the wingers into the game. The attackers press from the front to force long balls, allowing the team to win the second ball and launch rapid attacks.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Leighton W and Riona push high to support the wingers. This forces the opposition to defend deep and narrow. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders squeeze the space to deny the turn to attacking midfielders.
This 5-2-3 formation creates a very difficult block to break down through the middle. It is best suited for matches against possession heavy teams where the goal is to absorb pressure and break quickly.
