Starting Lineup

Matías (Villa) · Isaac (Sandoval) · Juan · Lionel (Pérez) · Matía (Ríos) · Zoe · Mateo · Santiago (Cuevas) · Rica · Leonardo (.) · Toñito

Ascoli relies on a heavy defensive identity and a compact block, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike on the transition. The team stays compact to deny space between the lines, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Every player knows their role in maintaining this defensive rigidity to frustrate more possession based teams.

Santiago sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line uses a back five with Mateo and Toñito acting as the central pair, while Lionel provides additional cover as a central defender. Matías and Zoe act as attacking wing backs, providing width when the team has the ball but dropping back to form a five when defending. The central defenders focus on winning the second ball and clearing the lines, while the wing backs track back to ensure the wide areas remain secure.

A flat four-man midfield sits ahead of the back five to congest the central zones. Isaac plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and disrupt opposition play. Leonardo and Juan operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Matía works to press aggressively and win the ball high. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and force the opposition to play wide, where they can be squeezed against the touchline.

The attacking phase is built around a lone striker, Rica, who acts as a target man to hold up the ball. Rica works to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. When Ascoli wins the ball, Matías and Zoe push forward to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. The team looks to break quickly, using the work of the midfielders to find the feet of the striker or exploit space behind the opponent line.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to defend in a low block with extreme compactness. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes. Another advantage is the potential for wide overloads when Matías and Zoe overlap the midfielders during a transition. This allows the team to shift from a defensive posture to an attacking one with great speed.

Ascoli uses this setup to frustrate dominant teams by sitting deep and remaining hard to break down. It is a formation best suited for matches against high possession teams where the goal is to defend a lead or exploit space on the counter.
