Nottm Forest Football Formation
Starting Lineup
NDZIÉ (73) · J. AGYEI (67) · A. LUTZ (70) · BENNETT (71) · PONOMAREV (73) · GROSS (68) · R. AYALA (73) · CONSTANTINOU (75) · DON SUMMERS (68) · LUIZ ANTÔNIO (74) · HOWARD (77)Nottm Forest prefers to play a low block with a heavy emphasis on defensive solidity, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup focuses on sitting deep to deny space behind the back line and then hitting teams on the transition. The goal is to compress the space between the units and force the opposition into wide areas where they can be contained.
Howard sits between the posts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit uses a back five to control the width and central areas of the box. Gross and Constantinou act as the central defenders, where Gross can step up to intercept while Constantinou provides cover. Don Summers plays as a right-sided center-back to help hold the line. The wing backs, Luiz Antônio on the right and R. Ayala on the left, are tasked with tracking back to form a five-man line when defending, but they also need to push high to provide width when the team wins the ball back.
The midfield functions as a compact block of four to protect the central zone. Ponomarev acts as the single pivot, sitting in front of the defense to shield the back five and pick up runners. J. Agyei and Bennett operate as central midfielders to win the second ball and link the play. A. Lutz provides additional support in the central area to help press in a mid-block. This four-man unit works to close down passing lanes and ensure the opposition cannot play through the lines easily.
In the attacking phase, Nottm Forest relies on a lone striker, Ndzié, to lead the line. Ndzié must hold up the ball and work as a pressing center-forward to disturb the opposition buildup. When the team breaks quickly, the wing backs, Luiz Antônio and R. Ayala, move forward to provide width and stretch the defense. The aim is to find Ndzié in transitions or use the wide players to deliver crosses into the box. The forwards focus on making runs in behind to catch the opposition defense out of position.
One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to find gaps in the central area. The five-man back line provides significant coverage against crosses and central penetrative passes. Additionally, the team can create quick transitions by using the wide areas once the midfield wins possession high up the pitch.
Nottm Forest utilizes this 5-4-1 to remain defensively solid and absorb pressure. This formation is best suited for matches against heavy possession teams where the goal is to defend deep and counter at pace.
