Argentina National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Dibu · Lisandro · Cuti · Giay · Tagliafico · Perrone · Enzo · Mac Allister · Lautaro/Julian · Prestianni · PazArgentina focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opposition before they can set their defensive line. This formation allows the squad to cover a lot of ground while maintaining enough players behind the ball to stay solid.
Dibu stays between the posts to command the area and sweep behind the defense when the line steps up. The back line operates as a back three with Perrone sitting centrally to hold the line while Cuti provides aerial strength and reading of the game. Lisandro sits to the left of the central trio to cover the space. Tagliafico plays as a left wing back to provide width and track back when needed, while Giay pushes up the right flank to overlap the winger.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Enzo acts as the primary ball carrier to drive forward and progress through the thirds. Mac Allister connects the defensive unit to the attack by dropping between the centre-backs to receive and finding the feet of the forwards. This pair must work hard to press in a mid-block and win the second ball to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
In the final third, Argentina utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Paz and Prestianni operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create space for the overlapping runs. Lautaro/Julian acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and fight for long balls. The goal is to use the width provided by the wing backs to isolate wide players in one on one situations or to deliver early crosses into the box.
One major advantage for Argentina is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, forcing the opponent into mistakes near their own goal. The setup also provides great compactness when defending because the wing backs drop into a narrow defensive block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines or play through the middle.
This formation is built to dominate games through aggressive pressing and quick verticality. It is best suited for facing teams that try to build out from the back with short passes.
