Starting Lineup

Shriyan · Vikash · Charan · Akshaj · Ashvath · Kirupa · Siva · Shravan · Nanda · Kailash · GK

A focus on defensive solidity and quick transitions defines this lineup, which operates in a 4-5-1 formation. This team aims to sit deep and deny space to the opposition before looking to hit in behind on the transition. By cluttering the central areas, they aim to force opponents to the flanks and then break quickly once the ball is won.

Vikash stands between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit utilizes a flat back four consisting of Nanda at right back and Shriyan at left back. In the middle, Kailash and Shravan act as the central defenders. Kailash and Shravan must hold the line and defend zonally to ensure the team remains compact. Nanda and Shriyan are tasked to track back and cover the wide areas if the opposition attempts to overlap, while the two central defenders work to win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure.

The midfield is composed of five players working to compress the midfield and protect the defensive block. Kirupa sits as a single pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. On either side of him, Ashvath and Siva act as central midfielders to win the second ball and recycle possession. Further forward, Akshaj and Charan operate as two tens in the half-spaces to connect the midfield and attack. These two players must press aggressively to win the ball high in the attacking third and look to play through the lines to reach the lone striker.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on GK as a lone striker. Since the formation is built to defend deep, GK must be able to hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move up the pitch. The wide players, Akshaj and Charan, provide the primary creative threat by looking to cut inside and create numerical superiority in the central areas. The goal is to use the movement of the attacking midfielders to create runs in behind for GK or to arrive late into the box to finish chances created from wide areas.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, particularly its ability to maintain a very narrow defensive block. By having Kirupa, Ashvath, and Siva occupying the central zones, the team achieves great compactness when defending. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can quickly shift from a deep block to an attacking wave once the ball is recovered. This allows the team to isolate the opposition defenders in one on one situations during rapid breaks.

The 4-5-1 formation is designed to be a defensively solid unit that relies on counter attacking. This lineup is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and require a compact block to negate their space.
