Estoril Praia aims to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with verticality using a 3-4-3. This formation is built to play with high intensity and quick transitions to catch the opposition out of position. The lineup relies on heavy pressing to disrupt the opponent and uses wide players to stretch the pitch during the attacking phase.
The goalkeeper 71 acts as the last line of defense behind a back three. The central defender 75 holds the line while the wide centre-backs 72 and 72 cover the space left by the wingers. This back three functions as a zonal line to defend the central area. When the team plays out from the back, these defenders look to find the midfielders to start the build up. They must stay compact to avoid being split by long balls and must step up to trigger the offside trap when the ball is played deep.
The midfield operates with a central pairing and two wide midfielders to provide width. The central midfielders 78 and 71 work to control the middle, with 78 acting to carry the ball forward and 71 shielding the defense. The wide players 76 and 75 play as attacking wing backs who provide the primary width for Estoril Praia. They are tasked to overlap the wingers and deliver crosses into the box. The midfield unit connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding the lines to the forwards.
In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to pressure the opposition back line. The striker 81 acts as a focal point to hold up the ball and find the runners. On the flanks, the wingers 77 and 79 act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the wide midfielders. This movement allows the wingers to find the feet of the striker or pull wide to isolate defenders in one on one situations. The front three press in pairs to force a long ball and win the second ball in the attacking half.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with the front three and the wide midfielders. The wide players 76 and 75 can create wide overloads when they push high up the pitch. Estoril Praia also benefits from the speed of transition when the midfield recovers the ball and immediately hits in behind the defense. The compactness of the back three and the central midfielders makes them hard to break down through the middle.
This 3-4-3 formation is a high pressing system designed to dominate territory through aggressive ball recovery. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back or play with a high defensive line.
