Starting Lineup

Barco · Colwill · James · Palestra · Caicedo · Henderson · J. Pedro · P. Neto · Palmer · Rogers · Martínez

Chelsea relies on a high press and verticality in this 2-5-3. The team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opponent can settle. This formation is built to dominate the center of the pitch and overwhelm the opposition through concentrated numbers in the middle areas.

Martínez operates between the posts to manage the space behind the defense. The back line consists of a staggered two man unit with Colwill and James. Colwill acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while James covers the space behind to sweep behind a high line. This small defensive unit must remain compact to prevent runners from finding space between the lines.

The midfield is a massive block designed to control the game. A double pivot of Barco and Palestra sits deep to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of them, Caicedo and Henderson operate as two tens in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Palmer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to break the opposition.

In the final third, Chelsea uses three attackers across the front. J. Pedro acts as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and fight for long balls. Rogers and P. Neto play as wide wingers who stretch the defense. Rogers tries to cut inside to create chances, while P. Neto looks to get to the byline and whip it in for the central runners. This attacking group works to isolate wide players in one on one situations during transitions.

This lineup offers immense numerical superiority in midfield to dominate possession. The density in the center allows Chelsea to compress the midfield when defending in a mid block. By using the wide players to spread wide, they can also create wide overloads when the full backs or midfielders push forward to support the attack.

Chelsea is a side that looks to squeeze the space and play through the middle of the pitch. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to suffocate an opponent through heavy pressing and central control.
