Rio Ave focuses on a heavy defensive block and quick transitions using a 5-2-3. The lineup is built to absorb pressure in deep areas before hitting the opposition with speed on the break. This formation prioritizes defensive solidity while looking to exploit the wide areas when the team wins the ball back.

Between the posts, 80 acts as the last line of defense. The back five is composed of 78 holding the center, flanked by 75 on the left and 75 on the right as wide centre-backs. In front of them, 76 and 75 operate as attacking wing backs to provide width. This unit functions as a narrow defensive block that stays compact to deny central passes, while the wing backs are ready to push high when the ball is recovered.

The midfield utilizes a double pivot to manage the center of the pitch. Both 76 and 75 work to shield the defense and win the second ball. One midfielder will often drop deeper to help the back five, while the other tries to carry the ball forward to connect the lines. Their main job is to intercept play and immediately look to find the attackers to bypass the midfield of the opponent.

Rio Ave employs three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. 75 operates as a lone striker, acting as a focal point to hold up the ball. On the flanks, 75 and 71 act as wide wingers who look to get to the byline and whip it in. The front three press the opposition back line to force long balls, creating space for the wing backs to overlap the winger and join the attack in combinations.

One major advantage for Rio Ave is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs join the attackers. The formation also provides immense compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. This setup allows the team to switch play quickly to the flanks once the ball is won.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on defensive discipline and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
