Sporting CP looks to play a highly vertical game through a 4-2-4 formation. The intent is to stretch the opposition by utilizing the full width of the pitch and using a high press to win the ball back quickly. This lineup is built to hit teams on the transition and pin the last defender with four dedicated attackers.

In the defensive unit, 82 operates between the posts to organize the back line. The team utilizes a flat back four to maintain a compact defensive block when the ball is lost. 85 acts as a right back to provide width, while 96 plays as an attacking left back to push high up the pitch. In the middle, 88 and 94 serve as the central defenders, focusing on winning the second ball and clearing the lines when under pressure. They must hold the line to prevent runs in behind.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. 85 and 83 work together to shield the defence and recycle possession when the attack stalls. One of these midfielders must carry the ball forward to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while the other stays deeper to deny the pivot of the opposition. This duo is responsible for winning the ball in a mid-block and immediately looking to find the front four.

The attacking structure relies on four players who stay high to pin the opposition back. The team uses two wide wingers, 87 on the right and 86 on the left, who want to get to the byline and whip it in. They are supported by a central partnership of 83 and 86. These two forwards work in combinations to find space between the lines or knock it in behind the defensive line. The front four are tasked to press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

Sporting CP offers several tactical advantages with this setup. The presence of four attackers allows for significant numerical superiority in the final third and can isolate wide players in one on one situations. Furthermore, the team can use the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position by breaking quickly once the double pivot recovers the ball.

This 4-2-4 formation focuses on high intensity and directness in the final third. It is best suited for matches where the opponent plays a high line and can be exploited through rapid vertical passes.
