Focusing on a high press and quick transitions, this team operates in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with speed. The main goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition before hitting them in behind on the transition.
ALBERTOSI acts as the last line of defense behind a sturdy back five. VORONIN holds the central position in the defensive unit, acting as the main anchor while Vasović and Zebec sit on either side of him. The central defenders are tasked to clear the lines and win the header when balls are played deep. COOPER and VOGTS act as attacking wing backs, providing the width and looking to overlap the wingers to deliver crosses. The unit works to stay compact, often dropping into a low block when the opponent finds space.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. BULGARELLI and SASTRE work together to protect the defensive line and recover possession. BULGARELLI drives forward with the ball to link the play, while SASTRE focuses on shielding the defense and cutting off the passing lane to the opponent's attackers. These two players must cover a lot of ground to ensure the team can transition from a defensive block into an attacking phase.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. MÜLLER plays as a lone striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and wait for support. On the flanks, VUKAS and KOPA operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and find space in the half spaces. This movement creates space for COOPER and VOGTS to push forward. The forwards are expected to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the back five can intercept.
A major advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When COOPER and VOGTS push high, they combine with VUKAS and KOPA to overwhelm the opposition full backs. The formation also offers great compactness when defending, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The speed of transition allows the team to move from a deep block to a direct attack in seconds.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on intense pressing and rapid vertical play. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle to handle wide numerical superiority.
