Ajax relies on a direct and vertical style of play when using a 5-3-2. This formation focuses on controlling the middle of the pitch and using quick transitions to exploit space behind the opposition back line. The lineup is designed to win the second ball and move the ball forward quickly through the central corridors.
Between the posts, 82 acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of 82, 84, and 81. These central defenders focus on defending zonally and holding the line to prevent runs in behind. They are joined by attacking wing backs, 81 on the right and 81 on the left, who push high to provide width. These wide players must track back quickly to form a five man block when the team loses possession, ensuring the defensive unit stays compact.
The midfield works as a three man midfield with a single pivot. The player 82 sits in front of the back three to shield the defense and cut off the passing lane to the opposition strikers. Next to the pivot, 82 and 84 operate as inverted eights. These players connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward or playing through the lines. They are tasked to press in a mid-block to win the ball back and immediately look to find the forwards.
Ajax utilizes two forwards in a partnership up front. 84 and 83 work closely together to link up play between the lines. They often play as a pressing centre-forward and a second striker, with one player dropping deeper to find the feet of the striker while the other looks to run in behind. This duo aims to stretch the defense by pulling center backs out of position, creating space for the wing backs to overlap the winger or drive into the half spaces.
One major advantage for Ajax is the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. Because the wing backs, 81 and 81, push so high, they force the opposition to defend the flanks constantly. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a low block, making it very difficult for opponents to find space centrally. This setup allows the team to transition from a deep defensive stance to a dangerous attacking unit in seconds.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a heavy presence in the center while maintaining high width through the wing backs. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to sit deep against dominant possession sides and hit them on the transition.
