AZ seeks to play with a high press and heavy verticality through a 4-2-4. This formation is built to overwhelm the opponent in the final third by pushing as many players as possible into the attacking zones. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with speed before the opposition can settle.

The goalkeeper 80 sits behind a flat back four to maintain the defensive line. Both 82 (RCB) and 82 (LCB) operate as central defenders who must hold the line and stay compact to prevent through balls. On the flanks, 80 (LB) and 80 (RB) act as full backs that need to balance their duties between supporting the attack and tracking back to cover the wide areas. This defensive unit must act as a single block to keep the space between the lines tight.

In the center of the pitch, a double pivot provides the link between the back line and the attack. The two midfielders, 80 (RCM) and 77 (LCM), are tasked with protecting the defense and recycling possession. While 80 (RCM) works to shield the center, 77 (LCM) must help drive the ball forward to connect the phases of play. This pair needs to be disciplined to ensure the team is not caught out on the transition when the full backs push high.

The attacking lineup uses four forwards to pin the opposition defense. Two center forwards, 83 (CF) and 82 (CF), act as a partnership to stretch the central defenders and find pockets of space. They are supported by 78 (RW) and 79 (LW), who operate as wide wingers to provide width and create chances. The team looks to attack in combinations through the middle or use the wingers to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

AZ gains a massive advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves with four players leading the charge. This puts immense pressure on the opposition goalkeeper and defenders to make mistakes. Additionally, the formation allows for quick transitions where the team can hit in behind the defense with a high volume of players moving forward at pace.

This 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk, high reward system focused on offensive dominance. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block or overwhelm a less disciplined opponent.
