Bologna focuses on a compact mid-block and direct play through a 4-5-1. This formation is built to sit deep, deny space between the lines, and wait for opportunities to hit in behind on the transition. The team relies on being hard to beat and using the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition when they win the ball.

MAZZOLA starts between the posts to organize the defensive line. A flat back four consists of GUNDERSEN at right back and D. MONTEIRO at left back, both tasked with tracking runners and keeping the defensive line tight. In the center, KAFKA and MARTELLI act as the primary defenders, with KAFKA providing aerial strength and MARTELLI covering the space behind when the full backs push up. The unit aims to hold a compact shape to force the opponent wide and minimize central penetration.

The midfield functions as a five man block to congest the center of the pitch. L. AGNOLI sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of him, R. SCHULZE and E. FORTUNATO work as two central midfielders to win the second ball and carry the ball forward. S. BIVAR and ISRAEL VINÍCIUS operate as wide midfielders who can track back to help the full backs or drive into the half spaces. This group connects the defense to the attack by moving the ball quickly from the pivot to the wide players.

Bologna employs a lone striker in GYLDENSTIERNE to lead the line. As a pressing centre-forward, GYLDENSTIERNE works to pin the last defender and disrupt the build up from the opposition goalkeeper. The attack is built through quick transitions where ISRAEL VINÍCIUS and S. BIVAR look to cut inside and find the striker. This setup creates runs in behind and encourages the wide midfielders to deliver early crosses into the box to exploit the central presence.

One major advantage for Bologna is the ability to compress the midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The formation also offers a high degree of defensive solidity when sitting in a low block. By packing the central areas, the team can quickly switch play to the wings to catch the opposition out of position during a break.

This 4-5-1 formation provides a disciplined and hard to break down defensive unit. It is best suited for games against possession heavy teams where Bologna can sit deep and strike on the counter at pace.
