Lecco relies on a compact and hard to break down system when playing in a 4-5-1. The team seeks to deny space to the opposition and hit teams on the transition. This formation is built to play a defensive game that waits for the right moment to break through the lines.

R. LASTRADE starts between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back four operates as a flat line where LUKYANENKO and D. MILSTEIN act as the central defenders. LUKYANENKO focuses on being dominant in the air while D. MILSTEIN looks to cover the space behind his partner. On the flanks, FLAVIO W. and I. RESFLAIR act as wide defenders to prevent crosses. They stay narrow to keep the defensive unit close together and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.

The midfield works as a five man unit to control the center of the pitch. A double pivot featuring BONDARTSCHUK and SANTOS RUIZ sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. In front of them, A. LÓPEZ, R. MAZZOLA, and B. MIN-KYU operate to connect the lines. A. LÓPEZ and R. MAZZOLA work to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch while B. MIN-KYU helps to recycle possession and link the defensive block to the attack. This midfield unit can quickly shift to cover wide areas when the ball moves.

VILDÓSOLA operates as a lone striker to lead the line. He acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and force them into mistakes. The attack relies on the midfielders to carry the ball forward and support him. When Lecco wins the ball, the wide midfielders look to spread wide to stretch the defense. The goal is to use combinations to find the feet of the striker or hit in behind on the transition.

One advantage of this Lecco lineup is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block. The five players in midfield make it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves once the ball enters the middle third.

This 4-5-1 formation provides a solid defensive foundation for Lecco. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where the goal is to sit deep and counter at pace.
