Inter focuses on being defensively solid and hitting teams on the break using a 4-5-1. This lineup is built to sit in a compact block and wait for the opposition to make a mistake before driving forward through the middle. The team relies on heavy numbers in the center to control the tempo and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines.

T. HEINZ stays between the posts to organize the back line. Inter operates with a flat back four that maintains a narrow defensive block to protect the central areas. RYBAKOV and RABAH ABED work as the central defenders, with RYBAKOV focusing on covering space while RABAH ABED looks to win the header in aerial duels. P. VAN DAMME and STODDART act as full backs, providing width in possession but making sure to track back quickly to prevent being caught by wide attackers.

The midfield is a five man unit that provides a massive shield for the defense. SANTORO and B. SCHULZ play as a double pivot to deny the pivot of the opposition and protect the center. M. PORTA acts as the central connection, driving forward with the ball to link the defensive and attacking lines. In the half spaces, V. FERRETI and LUIZ CARLOS operate to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. This central congestion makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.

Inter utilizes a lone striker in Á. MONTES to lead the line. He acts as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition back line and hold up the ball when the team transitions. V. FERRETI and LUIZ CARLOS support him by making runs into the box or operating in the pockets of space behind the opponent midfielders. The team looks to build attacks through quick combinations in the middle or by using the full backs to provide width for late crosses. Á. MONTES must work hard to pin the last defender to create space for the incoming midfielders.

One major advantage for Inter is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to progress through the thirds. The team can also shift between a mid block and a high press easily by using the five midfielders to squeeze the space. This setup allows the team to stay compact when defending and then break quickly once the ball is won.

This 4-5-1 formation is designed to be a hard block that is difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where Inter can sit deep and counter at pace.
