Independiente focuses on a vertical style of play built around a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the pitch and quickly progress the ball toward the opponents goal. By packing the center, the team looks to win the ball and strike immediately, utilizing a high density of players in the central areas to disrupt the opposition.
Rey sits between the posts to organize the defense from the back. The defensive unit relies on a narrow two man line consisting of Valdéz and Arrayago. These central defenders must remain disciplined as they often face large spaces behind them. Since there are no traditional full backs, Valdéz and Arrayago are required to stay compact and cover the wide areas if the midfield is bypassed, while also acting as ball playing defenders to start attacks.
The midfield is the engine room for Independiente, utilizing a five man line that provides immense control. Tagliafico (C) operates as the left defensive midfielder, providing protection to the back line and helping to shield the two center backs. Godoy plays alongside him as the right defensive midfielder to maintain balance. Marcone acts as the central link, sitting in front of the defense to recycle possession and distribute play. In the half spaces, Zenón plays as the left attacking midfielder to create chances, while Pérez Curci operates on the right to provide additional passing options and drive the ball forward.
The attacking line uses three players to stretch the opposition. Barco plays as the left winger, looking to cut inside and create overloads in the final third. Montiel operates on the right wing to provide width and deliver crosses. Módica leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and making runs in behind the defense to pin the last defender. This front three works to press the opposition back line, forcing mistakes and creating quick transitions.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through numerical superiority in the midfield. By occupying the central zones with five players, Independiente can easily control the tempo and win the second ball. The team also creates wide overloads when the attacking midfielders and wingers combine, making it difficult for opponents to defend the flanks.
Independiente utilizes this aggressive lineup to overwhelm teams that struggle to control the center of the pitch. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to dominate possession and quickly transition into attack.
