Starting Lineup

Milklosko · Coufal · Reid · Ferdinand · Dicks · Bowen · Rice · Noble · Payet · Antonio · Di Canio

West Ham focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to exploit transitions and use the physical presence of the forwards to pin the opposition back. The goal is to win the second ball and quickly move the ball forward to the attackers.

Milklosko stands between the posts to command the area. In front of him, a flat back four maintains a compact defensive block. Ferdinand and Reid operate as the central pairing, with Ferdinand acting as the covering defender while Reid looks to win headers and clear the lines. Dicks and Coufal provide width from the flanks, with Coufal often pushing up to support the midfield while Dicks stays back to protect the space behind.

The midfield is organized in two lines of four to ensure the team can squeeze the space when defending. Noble and Rice operate as a central pairing, where Rice uses his high energy to win the ball high up the pitch and Noble works to protect the centre of the pitch. On the wings, Bowen and Payet provide the service. Bowen works hard to track back and defend, while Payet looks to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines with his passing range.

The attacking unit utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Di Canio operates as a second striker in the hole to link play, while Antonio acts as the primary striker to run in behind and use his pace. The team attacks in combinations, looking to use Bowen or Payet to whip it in for the forwards to attack the near post or far post. When out of possession, the front two press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

West Ham gains a significant advantage through the physical presence of the strikers and the ability to win it back high up the pitch. The combination of Rice and Noble in the centre allows the team to maintain compactness when defending. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads by having Coufal and Bowen work together to stretch the defence.

This 4-4-2 formation provides West Ham with a reliable way to defend deep and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that commit many players forward and leave space behind their defensive line.
