PSG Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Ferran · Kvaratskhelia · Godts · Dembélé · Ruiz · Vitinha · Digne · L. Hernandez · Marquinhos · Hakimi · SafonovPSG focuses on aggressive verticality and heavy attacking pressure through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition by committing many players into the final third and forcing turnovers high up the pitch. The intent is to play fast, direct football that uses constant movement to stretch the opposition.
Safonov operates between the posts as the lone man in goal. In front of him, Marquinhos and L. Hernandez form a central pair of defenders who must stay extremely alert to prevent long balls. Marquinhos acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while L. Hernandez provides cover to sweep behind a high line. Because there are only two central defenders, they must defend zonally and communicate constantly to avoid being caught out during transitions.
The midfield works in a box pattern to control the center of the pitch. Digne and Hakimi play as a double pivot to shield the back line and recycle possession. Hakimi often looks to carry the ball forward from deep, while Digne helps to sit deep and protect the space left by the advancing defenders. Ahead of them, Ruiz and Vitinha operate as two tens in the half spaces to link the play. Ruiz looks to find space between the lines, and Vitinha uses his passing range to progress through the thirds and create chances for the attackers.
The attacking unit is extremely wide and aggressive. Godts stays on the left flank as an inverted winger to cut inside, while Dembélé operates on the right to stretch the defence. In the central zone, Kvaratskhelia and Ferran play as two forwards in a partnership. Kvaratskhelia uses his dribbling style to beat men in tight spaces, while Ferran works to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. This front four works to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through heavy offensive numbers. PSG can create wide overloads and immediate numerical superiority in the attacking zones. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. By occupying the half spaces with Ruiz and Vitinha, the team can quickly switch play to the wingers to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
PSG relies on a high risk, high reward style that prioritizes constant pressure. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a deep low block through sheer volume of attacks.
