Peñarol Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Chilavert · Montero · Maurício Lemos · Laxalt · Máxi Pereira · Arevalo/Orteman · Gaitan/Gargano/Solari · Cebola/Gaston · Olivera · Forlan · Dario Silva/ZalayetaPeñarol relies on a heavy counter attacking identity using a 5-3-2 formation. The lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition in transition. This system prioritizes defensive stability and compactness to make the team difficult to break down in central areas.
Chilavert operates between the posts to anchor the defensive unit. The back line functions as a narrow defensive block consisting of three central defenders. Montero and Maurício Lemos work as the wide centre backs, while Arevalo/Orteman sits in the middle to provide strength. Máxi Pereira acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while Laxalt performs a similar role on the left to support the flanks. The central trio must defend zonally and stay close to one another to prevent gaps between the lines.
The midfield operates as a three-man midfield with a carrier to move the ball forward. Cebola/Gaston occupies the left side to help recycle possession, while Gaitan/Gargano/Solari controls the right. Olivera plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the midfield and the attack. This group works to squeeze the space in the middle and press from the front when the ball enters their zone. They must be ready to win the second ball to launch quick attacks.
Peñarol uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Forlan plays as the right striker, utilizing his clinical finishing and technical ability, while Dario Silva/Zalayeta occupies the left striker role. The attack is designed to create runs in behind the opposition defence. When the wing backs like Máxi Pereira and Laxalt push up, the two forwards can use the width to stretch the defence or combine in tight spaces. The forwards are expected to press the opposition back line to force a long ball.
A major tactical advantage for Peñarol is the ability to shift between a back five and a back three during transitions. The presence of attacking wing backs allows the team to create wide overloads when moving into the final third. Additionally, the compactness when defending makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. This formation provides great protection against teams that rely on heavy central penetration.
The 5-3-2 formation allows Peñarol to remain defensively solid while remaining lethal on the break. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams that leave space behind their high defensive line.
