AEK focuses on a direct and vertical style of play within a 4-4-2 formation. The team looks to win the second ball and transition quickly to catch the opposition out of position. This lineup is built to stay compact and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition defense when moving from a mid-block into attack.

In goal, NASI provides the first line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four, where ZAGLI acts as the right back and PROXENOU covers the left. AVA and KAPNISI form the central pairing, tasked with defending zonally and winning headers during set pieces. This back four must hold the line to ensure the team does not get caught by long balls, with the defenders stepping up to set the offside trap when the ball is played deep into the midfield.

The midfield works as a double pivot with SAICH and SERNA sitting in front of the defense to shield the back four. SAICH and SERNA are responsible for intercepting passes and recycling possession to the wider areas. Further up the pitch, VIOLARI and ΚΟΓΓΟΥΛΗ operate in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. VIOLARI and ΚΟΓΓΟΥΛΗ need to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and provide service to the forwards.

AEK utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. CHATZINIKOLAOU and SPYRIDONIDOU act as the main threats, often looking to make runs in behind the opposition defense. CHATZINIKOLAOU and SPYRIDONIDOU combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position, creating room for VIOLARI or ΚΟΓΓΟΥΛΗ to arrive late into the box. The duo works together to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the midfield can intercept.

One clear advantage for AEK is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the two lines of four close together, they squeeze the space between the lines and deny the turn to opposition midfielders. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can quickly switch play from one side to the other to find wide players in one on one situations.

This 4-4-2 formation provides AEK with a solid foundation for a direct and pressing game. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line and can be caught out on the transition.
