Starting Lineup

M.Maignan · Gila · Calafiori · Tresoldi · Cissé · Pulisic · Sealemaekers · Pavlović · D.Moreira · D.maldini · A.Rabiot

Milan focuses on a high press and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle and force opponents into errors before hitting them with verticality. The team relies on intense energy to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward with speed.

Mike Maignan acts as the last line of defense, using his ability to sweep behind a high line when the team pushes up. The back four consists of Calafiori at left back and Sealemaekers at right back, both of whom can push up to provide width. In the center, Gila and Pavlović form the defensive block, with Gila providing aerial strength and Pavlović looking to step into midfield when the ball is played out from the back. This defensive unit works to stay compact and deny the turn to opposition attackers.

The midfield is a five man unit designed to control the center of the pitch. A.Rabiot sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of him, D.maldini and D.Moreira act as two eight players, with D.maldini looking to drive forward with the ball while D.Moreira connects the defensive and attacking lines. Cissé operates in the half spaces to press aggressively and win the second ball. Pulisic plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or carry the ball forward into the final third.

Milan utilizes a lone striker in Tresoldi to lead the line. Tresoldi acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow others to join the attack. Pulisic plays as a second striker in the hole to exploit the gaps between the opposition midfield and defense. The wide midfielders will often tuck in to create central presence, while the full backs overlap to provide width. The attacking movements focus on runs in behind and quick combinations to catch the opposition before they can sit deep.

The tactical advantages of this Milan lineup include the ability to press high in coordinated waves to disrupt the opponent's build up. The formation also offers compactness when defending, making it very difficult for teams to play through the middle. By using Pulisic in the hole, the team can often create numerical superiority in the attacking third during transitions.

This 4-5-1 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through pressing and rapid movement. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
