Starting Lineup

Danso (Sunderland) · Lienhart (Freiburg) · Alaba (Real Madrid) · Arnautovic (Crvena zvezda) · Laimer (FC Bayern) · Schlager (Nottm Forest) · Grillitsch (Frosinone) · Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund) · Baumgartner (RB Leipzig) · R. Schmid (Frosinone) · Zawieschitzky (RB Salzburg)

Aiming to dominate the middle of the pitch through extreme central congestion, this lineup utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. The intent is to use a heavy midfield presence to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition into an aggressive attacking front. By sacrificing width in the defensive line, the team relies on overwhelming the opposition with passing volume and physical presence in the center.

Zawieschitzky operates between the posts to provide a last line of defense. In front of him, Danso and Lienhart form a two man back line that must remain highly disciplined. Since there are only two central defenders, they often play a high line to squeeze the space and force a long ball. Danso and Lienhart must be ready to cover large areas of ground and track runners as they step up to intercept passes.

The midfield is the engine of this formation, functioning as a massive five man unit. Alaba and Laimer act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Alaba uses his passing range to move the ball from deep, while Laimer provides energy to press and win the second ball. Schlager and Grillitsch operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box and find pockets of space between the opposition lines.

The attacking front line features three players ready to punish the opposition. Baumgartner and R. Schmid provide width, though they often work to cut inside and create overloads in the middle. Arnautovic serves as a target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and find the feet of the runners. This front three is designed to press from the front, forcing the opposition back toward their own goal and creating chances through quick combinations.

One major strength is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. This formation also allows the team to win it back high up the pitch through coordinated pressing. Another advantage is the ability to quickly switch play to the wide players when the central areas become too crowded.

This lineup is built to suffocate opponents who prefer to build play through the middle. It is most effective against teams that struggle to handle high intensity pressing and physical battles in the center of the pitch.
