France focuses on a direct, high pressing style through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opposition quickly in transition. The team looks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defense while keeping a compact central presence to protect the goal.

MARCEAU stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. France utilizes a back five that can shift to create a narrow defensive block. GOMIS sits in the center as the main stopper, while BALY and CHARBONNIER operate as wide centre-backs to cover the channels. The wing backs, NGALULA on the left and GRALL on the right, act as the primary engines for width, pushing high to support the attack or dropping deep to form a back five when defending.

The midfield operates with a two man unit consisting of RIOU and ASLAOUI. This double pivot is tasked with screening the back three and recycling possession to the wings. RIOU and ASLAOUI must work hard to cover the central spaces, often stepping up to press when the opponent tries to play out from the back. They act as the link between the defensive unit and the front three, looking to find the attackers quickly once the ball is recovered.

In the attacking phase, the team employs three attackers across the front. YONTSI leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and pinning the last defender. On the flanks, N’DIOR and CARTIGNY act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create overloads in the half spaces. This movement allows the wing backs, GRALL and NGALULA, to overlap the winger and deliver crosses into the box. The front three work together to press the opposition back line, forcing long balls and winning the second ball.

This formation offers significant advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having five players in the first line of the press, France can squeeze the space and deny the turn for opposition midfielders. Additionally, the system provides great security against counter attacks due to the presence of three central defenders and a double pivot. The wide overloads created by the wing backs and wingers allow the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and rapid transition play. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to absorb pressure and then exploit space behind a high defensive line.
