Japan aims to play a direct and vertical style of football through a 4-4-2. This formation focuses on quick transitions and getting the ball forward to the attackers as fast as possible. The lineup is built to strike quickly once the ball is won in the middle of the pitch.

TODAI sits between the posts to command the area. The back four stays in a flat back four when defending in a mid-block. KAJI plays as the left back to provide cover, while OOKUBO acts as the right back to help the midfield. In the center, SAWAMURA and YAGIRI work as the central defensive pair to clear the lines and win the second ball. They must stay compact to prevent any runs in behind.

The midfield utilizes a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. WATANABE acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. HINO and AKIU operate as the central midfielders to press in a mid-block and win the ball back. NARA plays as the attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the striker and play through the lines. This unit works to connect the defensive line to the front two.

Japan uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. MIYASHIRO and ASAKURA work together to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind. MIYASHIRO acts as a target man to hold up the ball, allowing ASAKURA to make runs into the box. They look to receive on the half-turn and either carry the ball forward or lay it off to the oncoming midfielders. This creates constant pressure on the defenders.

One major advantage for Japan is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front two can trigger a press that forces a long ball from the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball. This allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can set the offside trap.

This 4-4-2 formation relies on intense pressing and rapid forward movement. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back.
