Rubin focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 4-4-2. This formation is built to control the pitch through a compact mid-block and rapid transitions that catch the opposition out of position. The team looks to win the ball and move it forward quickly to the strike force.

The defensive unit starts with 77 in goal to command the area. Rubin uses a flat back four that maintains a tight line to squeeze the space between the units. 76 at right back and 76 at left back are tasked to hold the width and track back when the ball is lost. In the center, 80 at right center back and 76 at left center back act as the primary defenders, working to win headers and clear the lines when under pressure. They must stay connected to avoid leaving gaps for runners.

The midfield is organized in two lines of four to ensure stability. 77 sits as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession when the team plays short from the back. Ahead of him, 76 at right central midfield and 76 at left central midfield work to protect the half spaces and win the second ball. The 76 playing as an attacking midfielder stays higher to connect the midfield to the front line, often looking to receive on the half-turn to play through the lines. This group must stay compact to deny the turn to opposition players.

Rubin attacks with two forwards working in close partnership. The 77 at left striker and 75 at right striker lead the press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. These two players use link-up play to combine in tight spaces or knock it in behind the defensive line. While one striker works to hold up the ball, the other looks to make runs into the box or pull wide to stretch the defence. The aim is to create one on one situations for the attackers to exploit.

A major tactical strength of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the lines close together, Rubin makes it difficult for opponents to play between the units. Another advantage is the speed of transition when the 76 at attacking midfield and the two strikers can quickly break quickly to exploit a high line. This setup also allows for effective double up actions on the flanks when the full backs push forward.

The 4-4-2 formation provides Rubin with a reliable way to defend deep and hit on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession but leave space behind their midfield.
