AEK focuses on a heavy verticality and aggressive attacking intent using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to overwhelm the opposition through high pressure and rapid direct play. The goal is to pin the opponent back and exploit spaces quickly once the ball is won high up the pitch.

The defensive unit starts with 79 between the posts. A flat back four protects the area, with 78 and 80 acting as the central pairing to hold the line. The 78 at right back and 76 at left back provide width in the defensive phase, though they must track back quickly to cover the space left behind during attacks. These defenders work to win the second ball and clear the lines when under heavy pressure.

A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to link the defense and the front four. The 80 at right central midfield and 78 at left central midfield are tasked with shielding the defense and recycling possession. While they provide a layer of protection, they are also expected to carry the ball forward to help transition into the final third. They must stay compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The front line is extremely aggressive, utilizing two central forwards and two wide players. The 81 and 80 operating as the two center forwards act as the primary goal threats, looking to run in behind or hold up the ball for others. On the flanks, 80 at right wing and 80 at left wing stay wide to stretch the defense. These attackers press from the front to force long balls and create chances through quick combinations in transition.

AEK gains a massive advantage through its ability to press high in coordinated waves with four dedicated attackers. This creates immense pressure on the opposition back line. Additionally, the formation allows for quick transitions where the wide players can isolate defenders in one on one situations. This lineup forces the opponent to defend deep and constant threat of direct balls to the two central strikers.

The 4-2-4 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate through offensive numbers and high pressure. It is best suited for matches against opponents who struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle intense pressure in their own half.
