Panathinaikos relies on a defensive solidity to launch rapid strikes, utilizing a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and soak up pressure before hitting the opposition on the transition. The tactical goal is to stay compact in the middle and use the width of the wing backs to stretch the play once the ball is won.

The defensive unit begins with 78 between the posts to organize the line. A back five provides a dense layer of protection, featuring 79 as the central anchor while 80 and 80 operate as the wider centre-backs. These two wide centre-backs are tasked with covering the spaces behind the wing backs. The wing backs, 81 on the left and 78 on the right, act as the primary source of width. They must track back to form a narrow defensive block when out of possession but are expected to push up once the team recovers the ball.

In the middle of the pitch, Panathinaikos employs a three-man midfield to control the central zones. 83 and 81 operate as the engine, with 83 looking to drive forward with the ball and 81 providing balance. The 81 player helps to shield the defence and win the second ball. The 78 playing in the attacking midfield role acts as the link, finding ways to play through the lines to the forwards. This midfield trio works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to any attacking players facing them.

The attacking front line relies on two forwards working in close partnership. 80 and 80 act as the primary threats, often looking to run in behind the opposition defensive line. They work to press the opposition back line to force a long ball and prevent easy build up play from the back. When the team moves forward, the wing backs provide the necessary width to allow the two strikers to focus on central movements, such as making runs into the box or playing a one-two to split the defence.

A major advantage for Panathinaikos is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of 81 and 78. When the wing backs push high, they force the opposition to pull defenders out of position. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders make it very hard for opponents to find space between the lines. This creates a platform to defend zonally and wait for the perfect moment to counter at pace.

This formation prioritizes a solid defensive block and quick verticality to punish mistakes. It is best suited for games against dominant teams that leave space behind their full backs.
