Polissia focuses on a vertical style that looks to hit teams in transition, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before launching quick attacks. The team relies on a strong defensive base to provide security, allowing the forward players to stay high and ready to break the lines.
In goal, 76 acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates as a back five, with 75 in the middle of the central defense to hold the line. To his left and right, 76 and 75 act as wide centre-backs to cover the channels. The width is provided by 76 on the right and 75 on the left, who act as attacking wing backs to push up the flank. This group works to stay compact and win the second ball when the opposition plays long.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with 75 and 75 occupying the two central roles. These two midfielders must work hard to shield the defense and protect the space in front of the back five. One of the 75 players is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high, while the other stays more central to recycle possession. They act as the bridge, carrying the ball forward from the deep block to connect the defensive unit with the attackers.
Polissia uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. On the wings, 77 and 76 operate as wide wingers who want to cut inside and threaten the goal. The 75 striker acts as a focal point to hold up the ball and bring the wingers into play. When the team wins the ball back, the wingers look to run in behind the defenders, while the wing backs provide support to create wide overloads. The front three press the opposition back line to force a long ball.
A major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a mid-block. By having five players across the back, Polissia makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the wingers are perfectly placed to exploit space the moment the double pivot wins possession. This allows the team to switch play quickly and catch the opposition out of position.
This 5-2-3 formation creates a very difficult block to break down through the middle. Polissia is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and need to be punished on the counter.
