SK Sturm looks to dominate the middle of the pitch through a high press and quick transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to control the central areas and use a heavy midfield presence to squeeze the space when the opposition has the ball. By packing the center, the team can win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to exploit the gaps behind the opponent's defensive line.
The defensive unit starts with 77 between the posts. A back three provides a solid foundation, with 77 acting as the central defender to organize the line. To his left, 76 sits as the left centre back, while 75 operates as the right centre back. This trio works to defend zonally, with the wide centre backs ready to step up or cover the space if the wingers push high. The unit stays compact to prevent through balls and forces the opposition to play wide.
In the middle of the park, SK Sturm employs a crowded midfield to dictate the tempo. A double pivot consisting of 79 and 75 sits in front of the back three to shield the defence and deny the turn to opposition attackers. Moving ahead of them, 78 and 78 operate as central midfielders to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They are tasked to drive forward with the ball and arrive late into the box. The addition of 75 on the left adds another layer to press aggressively and win the second ball in the middle third.
The attacking phase relies on two forwards working in a partnership to stretch the defence. The left striker 77 and right striker 76 act as a dual threat, often making runs in behind to exploit a high defensive line. They work together to press the opposition back line, trying to force a long ball or a mistake. When the midfield carries the ball forward, the two strikers look to receive on the half-turn or hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack.
One major advantage for SK Sturm is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows them to control possession and recycle possession easily. The compact nature of the 3-5-2 makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Additionally, the team can use the central density to trigger a press in waves, quickly winning it back and hitting in behind on the transition.
This formation creates a heavy central block that is difficult to break down. It is best suited for games where the team needs to control the rhythm against a side that likes to play through the middle.
