Widzew focuses on high pressing and verticality with a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward with speed to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to maintain high intensity to unsettle the opponent from the first whistle.
76 stands between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four operates as a flat back four when defending a mid-block. The left back 75 and right back 75 act as attacking full backs to provide width during the build up. In the center, 76 and 76 defend the space, with 76 focusing on covering while the other acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. The unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a high line.
The midfield uses a three-man midfield with a carrier to transition play. The left central midfielder 75 and right central midfielder 76 act as the engine, with 75 looking to connect the defensive and attacking lines while 76 works to win the second ball. The attacking midfielder 76 operates in the hole to find space between the lines. This trio works to compress the midfield and ensure the team stays compact when the ball is lost.
Widzew utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. The left winger 75 and right winger 75 act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the full backs. The striker 76 acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and force a long ball from the opposition. The front three work together to press from the front, looking to trigger a press as soon as the opponent tries to play out from the back.
One major advantage for Widzew is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build play. The inverted wingers 75 and 75 combined with the overlapping runs of the full backs create wide overloads. This setup also allows for great speed of transition, as the players are positioned to hit in behind on the transition immediately after winning possession.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick ball movement to dominate matches. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
