Hearts look to play a high pressing and vertical game with a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup focuses on forcing the opposition into mistakes and attacking with high intensity. The goal is to use the heavy presence of attackers to pin the opposition back and win the ball back high up the pitch.
In goal, 76 acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four to maintain a compact shape. 71 at right back and 71 at left back provide the width in the defensive line, often looking to push up to support the attack. The central defenders, 73 at right center back and 70 at left center back, focus on holding the line and defending zonally to protect the middle. This back four works to squeeze the space when the team presses.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to provide some protection for the back line. 70 at right central midfield and 71 at left central midfield are responsible for breaking the lines and recycling possession. They must cover large areas of the pitch to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle. One of these players will often drop deep to receive from the defenders, while the other attempts to drive forward with the ball to connect the defensive unit with the front four.
Hearts utilize four attackers to stretch the defense. 75 at left wing and 71 at right wing act as wide attackers who look to get to the byline and deliver crosses. In the center, 80 and 73 operate as a strike partnership. 80 acts as the primary threat in the box, while 73 can play as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off to the wingers or the oncoming midfielders. This front four is designed to press from the front and force long balls from the opposition.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the four forwards to trigger the press. Hearts can also create wide overloads when the wingers and full backs combine to overload the flanks. This creates many chances to whip it in toward the two central strikers.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through direct attacking and high pressure. It is best suited for matches where Hearts can exploit a high defensive line or outrun an opponent in transition.
