Starting Lineup
UNAI (SIMÓN) · JESÚS (ARESO) · DANI (VIVIÁN) · AYMERIC (LAPORTE) · YURI (BERCHICHE) · MIKEL (JAUREGIZAR) · BEÑAT (PRADOS) · OIHAN (SANCET) · IÑAKI (WILLIAMS) · NICO (WILLIAMS) · MAROAN (SANNADI)Athletic focuses on a heavy verticality and high intensity to overwhelm the opposition. The team operates in a 3-3-4 formation designed to pin the opponent in their own half. This lineup aims to use sheer numbers in the final third to create constant chaos and force errors through relentless pressure.
Unai stays between the posts to manage the defensive line from deep. The back three consists of Yuri as the left centre-back, Aymeric in the middle, and Dani as the right centre-back. Yuri and Dani provide width to cover the spaces behind the attacking midfielders while Aymeric acts as the central anchor. This defensive unit functions to win the second ball and quickly transition once possession is regained.
The midfield works in a three man midfield with a carrier and a creative tip. Beñat and Mikel work in the central zones to win the ball and recycle possession, with Beñat often looking to drive forward with the ball to connect the lines. Oihan sits in the hole as an attacking ten behind the forwards, acting as the link that plays through the lines. This trio is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and prevent the opponent from building from the back.
Athletic uses four attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Nico and Jesús operate as wide wingers who stay high to provide width, while Nico often looks to cut inside to threaten the goal. Iñaki and Maroan work as two forwards in a partnership, with Iñaki using his pace to run in behind and Maroan to hold up the ball. This front line is designed to attack in combinations and create runs in behind to exploit any gaps in the opponent's back line.
One major strength for Athletic is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The formation also creates immediate wide overloads because the wingers can isolate defenders in one on one situations while the midfield pushes up. This high line forces the opposition to play long balls, which the back three can then intercept.
This 3-3-4 formation is built for extreme offensive pressure and high tempo play. It is best suited for games where Athletic needs to break down a low block or overwhelm a side through sheer attacking volume.
